I just have to do this. I've been watching the latest Toyota sales campaign -- using a full-orchestra instrumental of a catchy tune that all of us know and most of us don't quite recognize...and just a tad ill-considered from a marketing standpoint, methinks. The tune is "Drunken Sailor". So! What exactly DO you do with a drunken sailor? Well, me Boyo! The answer is clear from the context of the music!
"Give 'em the wheel of a new Toyota!
Give 'em the wheel of a new Toyota!
Give 'em the wheel of a new Toyota!
Ear-LIE in the morning!"
Um, Madison Avenue, would you care to rethink this one?
At least with the Old Spice commercial music, the tune was appropriate to the product being sold. Stinkum water for men sold with a tune for which there are wonderful (and appropriate) parody lyrics...
"Bring me the whiskey, Mother!
I'm feelin' frisky, Mother!
Fetch me a sheep, for I'm lonely tonight..."
